Ingredients
  

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed buttery, flaky base that turns golden and crisp in the oven
  • 1 beaten egg beaten egg (for egg wash) gives the pastry a beautiful golden shine
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar (optional) for a sweet crunch on top

Apple Filling

  • 4 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced brings balanced flavor and juicy goodness
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar adds a rich, caramel-like sweetness
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar for a hint of extra sweetness
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour to help thicken the apple juices as they bake
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon lending warmth and aroma
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg adding depth and earthiness
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves infusing the tart with spiced warmth
  • a pinch salt enhancing all flavors
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice to brighten flavors
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced adding richness and flavor

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface into a 12-inch square and transfer it to the baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, mix the sliced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt, and lemon juice until well combined.
  • Spoon the apple mixture into the center of the pastry, leaving a 2-inch border.

Assembly and Baking

  • Fold the edges of the pastry over the apples, pleating as you go to create a rustic look.
  • Dot with butter pieces over the apple filling.
  • Brush the pastry edges with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Serving

  • Cool for 10 minutes before serving, warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For best flavor and texture, consider using a mix of apples. Don’t skip chilling the puff pastry for optimal puffing.
