Preparation

  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the room temperature butter and granulated sugar together until pale and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until the dough starts to clump together.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 30 seconds until smooth.
  • Roll out the dough to a thickness of about ¼ inch.
  • Using heart-shaped cookie cutters, cut out shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Chill the cut-out cookies in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
  • Bake the cookies for 13-16 minutes, or until the edges turn lightly golden.
  • Let the cookies sit on the tray for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Decorating

  • Once cooled, decorate with royal icing, glaze, or melted chocolate.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature butter and chill the dough to maintain shape. Avoid overmixing the dough and measure flour properly. For healthier alternatives, consider substituting some butter with applesauce and using whole wheat flour.
