Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder to ensure cookies rise perfectly
  • 0.5 teaspoon kosher salt for balance
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened for creamy texture
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For the Icing

  • 3 cups confectioners' sugar for smooth icing
  • 0.25 cups light corn syrup
  • 0.25 cups whole milk
  • 0.25 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • brown food coloring for decorating
  • brown sanding sugar for crunch and sparkle

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until fluffy and light in color.
  • Add the egg, milk, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Mix until well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined.
  • Shape the dough into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • Roll out the dough until 1/8 inch thick. Cut out shapes with a football cookie cutter and freeze for 10 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake cookies for 8-10 minutes or until golden on the edges.
  • Cool completely on a wire rack.

Icing

  • Prepare icing by mixing confectioners' sugar, corn syrup, milk, and vanilla, saving 1/4 cup for piping.
  • Color the remaining icing brown. Pipe outlines on cookies, then fill with the brown icing.
  • Sprinkle with brown sanding sugar while icing is wet.
  • Pipe laces on each cookie with reserved white icing.

Notes

Measure ingredients accurately for best results. Optionally, add cocoa powder to the dough or mix in nuts for added texture. Use different colors of icing for themed decorations. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
