Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh green beans Choose bright, crisp beans that snap easily.
  • 1 tbsp neutral oil (like avocado, canola, or grapeseed) This will help to sauté the vegetables without overwhelming their flavors.
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil Adds a rich, nutty aroma and flavor profile.
  • 4-5 cloves garlic (minced) For that unmistakable aromatic punch.
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger (minced) Provides a zesty kick that complements the dish perfectly.
  • 2 green onions (thinly sliced) They add a fresh, mild onion flavor and a pop of color.
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds (toasted) For added crunch and nuttiness.

Sauce Ingredients

  • 0.25 cup low-sodium soy sauce (or tamari) A savory base with a deep flavor.
  • 3 tbsp light brown sugar (packed) Adds a subtle sweetness that balances the savory notes.
  • 1 tbsp honey (or maple syrup) To enhance the sweetness naturally.
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar Adds a tangy kick that brightens the dish.
  • 0.5 tsp red pepper flakes (adjust to taste) For those who like a little heat.
  • 1 tsp cornstarch To help thicken the sauce.
  • 1 tbsp water (for cornstarch slurry)
  • 2 tbsp water (for steaming/sautéing) To ensure the beans cook to perfection.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Trim the ends off the fresh green beans, rinse them under cold water, and set aside.
  • Mince the garlic and ginger finely, and slice the green onions thinly, reserving some for garnish later.

Mixing the Sauce

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the low-sodium soy sauce, brown sugar, honey, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes.
  • In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water to create a slurry.

Cooking

  • Heat the neutral oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  • Add the green beans and sauté for 4-5 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp.
  • Push the beans to one side of the skillet, add the minced garlic and ginger, and sauté for 30-60 seconds until fragrant.
  • Pour the sauce mixture and 2 tablespoons of water over the beans and toss to coat, letting it bubble for 1-2 minutes.
  • Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for another 30-60 seconds until the sauce thickens.

Finishing Touches

  • Remove from heat, drizzle with sesame oil, and garnish with reserved green onions and toasted sesame seeds.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy the burst of flavors!

Notes

To elevate your Crack Green Beans, consider adding cooked chicken, tofu, or shrimp for protein. Adjust the red pepper flakes to customize heat levels. Experiment with nuts like peanuts or cashews for added texture.
